Your Purpose in Life

posted by Stevie B on April 17th, 2008

DecisionWithout a purpose in life, people live life aimlessly, feel blah and wonder why they are here.  However, with a purpose in life, people can begin to achieve passion and begin to see elements of happiness their life. The intention of this article is to provide you direction on what your true purpose in life is and how you can begin to figure it out. To begin to understand our purpose in life, lets first start by looking at the purpose of an object’s life, or more specifically, a pen’s life.

A pen’s life can be somewhat boring from our perspective because if nobody ever used the pen, then the pen’s purpose in life is to lie where it is forever. It would not try to change itself to do something different and it would not ever decide to become something different. It will always just lie there and be a pen until something external tries to influence it. How the pen gets influenced depends on the intention of the thing trying to influence it. To understand that influence, lets examine how I choose to influence a pen. I know that in order to write anything, I need to judge the pen to determine if it is the right colour and then I would control the pen so that I can write on the paper. Therefore, from the perspective of something that influences objects, I can conclude that the purpose of an object’s life is to lie around until something external chooses to judge and control it.

From the negative emotions article, we were able to conclude that negative emotions arose when I chose to control others, judge others or judge myself because I was treating others or myself like an object. Therefore, if an object’s purpose is to do nothing until something judges it or controls it and negative emotions arise because we are being told that we should not treat ourselves like an object, then to find the purpose of a living being’s life we should look at why we feel good, as that should tell us how to treat ourselves like a human being and find out the purpose of life.

To figure out why we feel good lets examine some things in life that give rise to positive emotions. Here is a list of things that makes people feel good:

- A beautiful sunset
- Admiring the beauty of a flower
- Being surprised by a loved one with a gift
- Hanging out and having a good time with your friends
- Figuring out a solution to a problem at work
- Finally solving a soduku puzzle

Based on these happy situations, the commonalities within them are as follows:
- Being in the moment (Looking at a sunset and admiring the beauty of a flower)
- Showing and giving appreciation or love (Surprised with a gift and hanging out with friends)
- Solving hard problems (Figuring out a solution and solving a soduku puzzle)

Therefore, if good emotions are signaling to us that we are treating ourselves like a living being, then we can conclude that the purpose of a living being’s life is to live in the moment, show and give love and solve hard problems.

If this is the case, then how does this answer what my purpose in life is? How can this solve what job I should do, who should I love, or anything else? To look for this article to answer these specific questions would in fact objectify you. This article cannot control your life and nor should it solve the hard problems within your life. To do so would actually counteract your true purpose in life, which is to figure out these problems yourself. If you never had a problem to solve, then you would never find enjoyment in solving problems and thus you wouldn’t be able to live your purpose in life. For instance, if the answer to a crossword puzzle were given to you before you answered it, you wouldn’t feel as excited about solving the puzzle. If this is the case, then to maximize the amount of enjoyment of your life, you have to solve the hard problems in your life. Only you can find out what your purpose in life is and finding that purpose is a part of being human. Objects don’t have that option, nor can they solve that puzzle. Only living beings like you do.

So be who you are suppose to be and live…
