The Ego Mind
The “Ego Mind” has been referred to as the mind that gets you in trouble, causes you to do bad things, is the cause of you being arrogant and it is responsible for your search for acceptance of others. Ecarte Tolle even alludes to the Ego Mind being the source of all conflict and if you train your Ego Mind so that it stops appearing in your life, then you will be free of conflict within your life. If all of this is the case, what is the ego mind and how does it relate to what we have already discovered on this website? Lets find out…
Considering that the ego mind is the cause of conflict, if we define how we cause conflict from what we already know about conflict, then we can define the ego mind. Since we know from the negative emotions article that all conflict starts when we begin to judge either others or yourself, then we can conclude that the ego mind, as defined by psychologist and people in general, is simply those thoughts that judge either others or yourself.
What has to be noted about this distinction of the Ego Mind is that we determined that judging thoughts are beneficial when it comes to objects, as I will not be able to know what food is unless I judge it. If I can’t judge, then I can’t eat and then I die. So the problem with the ego mind is not that it makes judgments in general, but that it makes the mistake of judging people like objects.
The reason why there is this distinction is because without judgmental thoughts, you can never have justice. Without the ability to judge people’s actions towards you and say “No I am not an object”, then you will be the victim of objectification. For instance, if someone where to come and rob you, without being able to judge that this is wrong, you will continue to be robbed. The more you are robbed, the more you are objectified until you hit a point in your life where you realize that you are an object because people just keep taking from you. As we realized in the consciousness article, the more you stop choosing and acting like an object, the faster you die. So the purpose of justice is to resist people who confuse you with being an object and without judgmental thoughts, you cannot judge whether someone is judging you.
Also, as we know from the “Who am I?” article, we are not our thoughts, emotions, actions, results or our bodies, which means that those things are objects that we can judge. So long as we do not associate any of these things as being who they are, then it is okay to judge them. For instance, if someone is robbing you, you can judge the act of someone robbing you and say that action is bad, but you cannot say that this person is bad because they are robbing you. The reason is that they are not their action.
To conclude, the “Ego Mind” is the classification of thoughts that judge people, including you. So the way to eliminate the ego mind, you must simply be aware of what you can judge and what you cannot judge. It does not include all judgmental thoughts because without judgmental thoughts, there would be no justice. With no justice, there is an increase in objectification. With an increase in objectification, there is an increase in death. So you just need to be aware of what you are judging and the conflict from your “Ego Mind” will be eliminated from your life.
