Perspective: The Truth Behind It
Perspective is a very interesting concept that actually dictates how you live your life, how you improve your life and, a lot of times, how you feel. However, the idea of perspective is often misunderstood. For instance, is there another perspective when it comes to who wins a hockey game or is the winner the winner? What is the difference between perspective and truth and can you guarantee that your perspective is truth? Since we act based on what we know, then don’t you act based on your perspective of things? If so, then how do you know that that you are acting correctly if you don’t know if your perspective is right? It is these questions and others that we will pursue in this article and hopefully your perspective on perspective will become truth. But I guess that depends…
To begin to understand perspective, we need to understand how perspective can be applied to your life, as there are instances where we know that no amount of perspective will change what happened, but in some other instances perspective does change what happened. So what are these instances?
What is Perspective?
To examine this question, lets look at an example where I score a goal while playing hockey. Since everyone is in agreement that I scored, then we can conclude that the goal I scored is truth. However, there are instances where I could have scored a very close goal. If the goal almost didn’t go in, then perspective comes into play. If you were the player on the opposite team who saw the puck, you would try to explain your perspective that the puck didn’t go in the net, while someone on my team would try to prove otherwise. It isn’t until a ref, or someone who is neutral to the outcome, decides to make a case to resolve the correct perspective. However, depending on the information that the ref or neutral party has, that person may or may not be able to decide what is the truth and so they will only be able to give their answer based on their perspective. So perspective is required when there is little to no information that can conclusively prove the truth. Once there is consensus, like everyone agreeing the puck went in the net, then you can conclude there is truth.
How do we know if our perspective is truth?
When other people can question and choose to agree that the perspective is truth. This means that truth is a collective perspective. However, this collective perspective must be given a chance to be questioned. Without the ability to question, then people are being objectified, or controlled. One must be able to influence the truth in order to make it the truth, which is why we ask you to question everything within this site, as we want to find the truth about life.
So is that all there is to perspective?
Well yes and no. See perspective is not just about whether the result you wanted happened or not, but it also about why the result happened. If you were to ask me why I scored the goal, I could say that I practiced my shot to be able to put the puck right where I wanted too. However, how do I know that the reason why I scored was because of how I was practicing my shot? If you were to ask the goalie why I scored, the goalie might say that he/she was in the wrong spot, thus giving me a bigger spot to score. If you were to ask the defenceman, he/she might say that I had a lucky bounce. So with all of these different perspectives, whose perspective is the truth? The answer is that it depends, as not everyone will be able to agree on why something happened, so there really isn’t a collective perspective.
What is more important is what will happen after the result. In this particular example, each person will improve their lives based upon their perspective. Since I think I have a wicked shot because of how I practise, I will continue to practise my shot. The goalie will think that he/she was out of position, so he or she will practise on positional play. The defenceman, since he or she believes it was luck, they will do nothing to improve their performance, because luck is nothing they can control. So you see, perspective will drive you to improve your life to get the result you want, if you believe you have control over the result. If you believe you have no control over the result, then you will not improve your life and thus you will continue to do the same thing over again, which will result in the same result. This is why it is paramount to try and have a perspective that allows you to have control over the outcome. Without control, you will not change. If you won’t change, then you will get the same result.
Once you change your perspective into one that you can control, then this perspective will drive you to change your life. Since perspective is the catalyst to changing your life, then you must try and get the best perspective possible, as the best perspective will result in the greatest change in your life.
So how do you know whether you have the right perspective?
By following your gut. We know that you aren’t an object, so if you feel bad when you determine your perspective, then understand that your perspective is objectifying yourself or someone else, so that cannot be the right perspective, as we are not objects. If you find that you are happy and excited about your perspective, then your perspective is humanizing you and that must be the right perspective, as you are a living being. Therefore, if you feel good about your perspective, then you have the right perspective.
To summarize, perspective comes into play when there is little information about the result or why the result happens. Truth only comes into play when a group can question the perspective and come to an agreement that the perspective is correct. Since perspective drives actions, then it is important to understand the right perspective. To do so, one just needs to look at their gut to find out if their perspective is correct or not.
