How You Get What You Want In Life

posted by Stevie B on December 20th, 2007
ResultsMoney, Fame, Power, Love, and Happiness are but a few things that some people have and some people do not. For those that have it, some of those people earned what they got and other people gave it to them. Even other people say that luck is the reason why people get what they want, but if it was just luck, then how can someone be consistently lucky unless they actually do something to influence their outcome. So then how is it that some people can get what they want and others cannot? To find out, we need to understand how to control HOW you get things in your life. This article will explain to you exactly how you get the results that you ask for in your life.

GO TO THE “HOW PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY HAVE” QUIZ PAGE
The quiz will walk you through this article in a more interactive manner by asking you questions that you have to answer, with corresponding feedback to help you understand this problem in more depth.

How we get the results in our life

There are two ways in which you get something within your life. Either the world gives it to you or you go after it. Here are the typical flows from both situations:

SCENARIO 1

Outside World Gives you something (How to determine what you want)

Result -> Thought -> Emotion(Good or Bad) -> Memory

The result starts with your own perception of what happened, then you receive a feeling about that perception and then you store into your memory about how you thought and felt about the result.

In this type of scenario, your life becomes dependent upon the results from the outside world. This is an ideal scenario when you don’t know what you want, as the world gives you some different results to see what you may or may not want. The problem is that since the outside world is determining what you get in life, instead of you, you really have no control over what you get in your life. Therefore, it is advantageous to be in this scenario when you are learning about what you want, but staying in this scenario and letting the world determine your results will mean that you have no control over your life. No control over your life means you can be really happy or really sad depending on how the world gives you what it gives you, but never always happy.

SCENARIO 2

You act to create something (Know what you want)

Thought -> Emotion -> Action -> Result -> Memory

Your thoughts generate an emotion. Both thought and emotion generate an action and the action generates the result. Then the entire process is remembered for future purposes.

In this scenario, your life is determined by what you want, which is something you control as the controller of thought. Since you know what you want, you think thoughts in relation to that
very thing that you want and from there you act in a way to give you the result you desired. This scenario gives you control over your life and can maximize the happiness that you achieve, so it is advantageous to be in this scenario as much as possible.

The next step in determining how we get our results is to examine how each step plays a part in the creation of your result.

Actions

Action is the product of thought and emotion. You will act based on what you think and how you feel. For instance, say you had to do a speech to one hundred people to tell them about this new product that your company wants to promote. Now lets say you feel good as this will be a great career booster, so you want to do your best. This thought and emotion will drive you to act towards preparing a great speech so that the presentation is perfect.

However, lets say your thoughts are also saying that you stink at public speaking and that people will laugh at you, you will choke, stutter and just fail miserably. So when the time comes to do the speech, your bad thoughts cause you to sweat, act nervous and just perform poorly while doing the speech. Thus, these new thoughts and emotions now drove you to say the speech in a manner that was not to your liking. So actions are just the product of your thoughts and emotions.

Emotions

Please read the article on emotions to get a clearer picture as to why we feel bad. In terms of how emotions play a part on how we get what we get in life, understand that emotions are a result of thoughts and they never come without thought.

Since you control your thoughts, you also control your emotions. Ponder that for a second. Most people react based on their emotions and use emotions as a method to justify their actions. For instance, if someone cuts you off on the highway, you might get angry and chase the person because you were mad. If you took a step back, you would see that you actually got angry because you thought that this person almost destroyed your car and showed no remorse for doing such a thing. If you examine that thought, you will observe that you are looking through your perspective and not theirs. That person may have not checked their blind spot and had no idea you were even there. If that were the case, then the thought that they almost destroyed your car without remorse could be wrong. If you thought that they didn’t see you and they would have avoided the situation had they noticed you, the feeling of anger would go away and one of comfort would take its place.

However, notice that if you continued to think that they cut you off to do harm and you continued chasing the person, the result could be that you get into a physical fight that may turn bad for both parties involved, which is a result that nobody wants as per the article on emotions, as you can’t objectify a person. But, if you thought the “in my blind spot” thought, you would have continued to drive along, unaffected by the circumstances, resulting in you continuing your day without the negative result in the other example. Thus, there are two different emotions that result in two different outcomes. You can have one favorable emotion and a favorable outcome, or you can have one not so favorable emotion with a not so favorable outcome.

Therefore, your emotions are not telling you how to act, but they can be used for guidance to let you know when your thinking is on track or not. When you are holding positive thoughts, then your emotions signal you that these thoughts will yield the results you are seeking and you will experience an emotion that feels good. When you experience a negative emotion, this is your guidance mechanism telling you, “Stop thinking along these lines, as you are treating someone or yourself as an object and you will have a result that you do not want.”

Thoughts

How can you walk to a destination without thinking about the destination you want to go too? How can you be angry without knowing who or what you are angry at? Thoughts are the bedrock of all actions and emotions and so it is important to understand thought, since thought creates emotion and actions, which generate your results in life. Thoughts are your perceptions, memories, ideas and wants. The focus on this section on thought will be on perception, or what is considered your beliefs, because this is how you figure out what happened so you can take action. If your perception is wrong, then your action will also be wrong and you won’t get what you want. So only when you properly perceive things will you be able to act in a way to get what you want. Perception is a vital tool in determining if you get what you want. We will discuss memories, ideas and wants in other articles, as they are other tools to get you what you want after you’ve perceived the situation.

The perception of the world, or your understanding of the world, completely determines the world that you live in. For instance, say you heard a doorbell ring and nobody was at the door even after checking everywhere. Did the doorbell ring? Only if you perceived it that way. You may say a ghost rang it, some sort of a malfunction happened or that you were just hearing things at it was probably something else. Whatever that perception is, it will guide you on how to act. If you thought it was a ghost, you’d probably be a little nervous and may find out how to rid your house of ghosts. If you thought the doorbell was broken, then you’d probably take measures to try and fix it. If you thought it was something else that rang, then you’d disregard what sounded like a door chime and continue on with your life as if nothing happened. Either way, you are right and you will act in accordance with that perception.

Now a doorbell chime is but just one example. You are thrust into hundreds of situations every day and your perception of those situations determines your life and how you act every day. So your perception of the world actually determines your world because you look to your perception to figure out what is going on and how to act. Examples of different types of perception that affect your life are around money, relationships and yourself. The way you perceive each of these subjects will determine what you get in life. If you think you are ugly, then you will act in accordance with that perception. If you think you are poor, then you will act in accordance with that perception. Perception is the driving force behind what you get in life.

Sometimes the world tries to influence your perception. For instance, a politician who expresses a view that they think you should have a certain view of marriage is trying to influence your perception. However, you must agree to that influence in order to act in accordance with their thought. Therefore, even though the world may try to influence your thought, you still have complete control over it.

Therefore, your perception of the world helps to shape it. This perception tells you how you should feel, how you should act and therefore, how you get the results in your life. Since we already learned that we are the creator of thought, then this means you create your perception. Outside influences help to shape your perception, but ultimately it is you that determines it.

Summary

To summarize, figuring out what you want starts by seeing what options you have in life. The world will present to you a multitude of ideas on what you want and what you do not want. It is through this interaction that you can determine what it is you want to get in your life. Once that idea becomes more refined, you begin to pursue what you want by arranging you perception of the world so you feel happy and act in a way that allows you to finally get what you want. Since we are the creator of thought and since thought determines how we act, which gives us our results, then we can conclude we can create our results through thought. The more we think about what we want, we will become more emotionally towards getting it, we will act more to get it and, finally we will get what we want.

This understanding of how people get what they want will help you to be one of those lucky people. If this quiz has helped to change your view of the world so that you can now be a “lucky” person, then you can show your appreciation HERE.
